Just hearing the word “Porsche” conjures up images of Excellence. The iconic car maker has set the Standard of Excellence at the 24-hour Le Mans and now Autoweek tells the story about how the company and its drivers have won the race a record 19 times since 1970. –By Brian Hurlburt, Host, Magnifying Excellence Podcast.
From Autoweek.com writer Ben Barry:
The most recent Le Mans victory), with the all-wheel-drive hybrid 919 in 2017, couldn’t have been further removed from the first in the fearsome 917, a race car with a 246 mph top speed if only rudimentary aerodynamics, but Porsche’s victories thread between these eras like stitches through Le Mans history.
Humility while winning has also been a part of the Porsche story according to Autoweek and the company’s drivers.
“Behind the winning car you have talent at Porsche: engineers, mechanics, people who are passionate and do their best at 100 percent without compromise, but they don’t get the glory,” driver Jacky Ickx said. “The driver is a very small part of that success. All the people who have driven have been very privileged to be a member of that unique company.”
Ickz won the Le Mans six times and four of those titles were racing with Porsche. In 2020, the company announced a 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera ‘Belgian Legend Edition’ to honor the Ickx, who was born in Belgium. Only 75 are available.
